Woeful Weekend, Bs, Irish, Pats all fall

It was a rough weekend for your Uncle Buck as the Bruins, Fighting Irish of Notre Dame and the Patriots all lost, leaving UB to once again drown his sorrows in Canadian Club whiskey and Pulled Pork sandwiches...

UB's Saturday was planned around seeing the #9 ranked Fighting Irish take on #1 ranked and back to back defending champion USC in South Bend. After watching the pep rally from Friday night on Sportscenter UB got all fired up and couldn't wait for the game to start. UB remembered going to a ND pep rally with DK back in the day, but it wasn't nearly as big as the rally that filled half of the stadium. Joe Montana and Tim Brown were just a few of the ND Alumni to attend and speak to the students.

USC tailback Reggie Bush lit up the Irish for 160 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns. The game went back and forth, with ND picking off Matt Leinart twice...It was awesome to see Charlie Weis us the same playbook as last year's Patriots to run the offense. The old spread em' out QB keeper and slant across the middle are still Pats staples...In the 4th, ND had USC pinned back at 3rd and 19 with a 3 point lead, but let them off the hook as Leinart changed the play on the line on 4th down and completed a floater for a 1st down. It went for 61-yard pass to Dwayne Jarrett. USC got it down to the 1 when Leinart fumbled out of bounds. The clock ran out and it looked like ND had pulled the upset, but USC got the ball back at the 2.

While calling for a spike to stop the clock and kick a field goal, Matt Leinart launched himself toward the end zone with Southern Cal's winning streak and its No. 1 ranking hanging in the balance. Leinart took it in over the left side and got a little help moving the pile from Reggie Bush. The Touchdown gave USC the 34-31 win and stunned the ND fans. No matter what the outcome it was one of the best games UB has ever seen.

While Reggie Bush's push of Leinart was illegal, he was never called for it. It did remind UB of the game winning touchdown in the Ice Bowl between Green Bay and Dallas when the GB running back (#30) specifically put his arms up to show the ref's he wasn't pushing Bart Starr from behind on the QB keeper. For years many though the was signaling touchdown.

UB still says the 1984 BC win over Miami was the best college game of all time...

The Bruins dropped to 3-3 on the season after Dominik Hasek made 34 saves on 35 shots and registered his 300th career win. The Ottawa Senators beat the Bruins 5-1 Saturday night at the Corel Centre. Ottawa remained the only unbeaten team in the Eastern Conference at 5-0, while the loss ended Boston's three-game win streak. Boston will look to get back to its winning ways when they face Montreal next Tuesday, the final game of their current six-game road trip.

Sunday was worse. Not only did UB's power go out 10 minutes before kickoff, leaving UB and Griff in the dark, but the Patriots fell behind 21-3 in the first half against the Denver Broncos and then 28-3 after the Broncos 1st possession of the 2nd half.

Brady was pressured all game as the rookie wall on the left side of the O-line crumbled (including the ejection of Logan Mankins) and Corey Dillon sat out. The Patriots were burned several times for deep pass plays, and it seemed like every time Punter Josh Miller pinned the Broncos deep, they would respond with a 90+ yard drive for a score. The Patriots made a valiant comeback, scoring 14 points in the 4th quarter, but it was too little too late. So now the Pats go into the bye week licking their wounds and welcoming back Teddy Bruschi.

Another weekend like this and UB will have to switch back to moon shine...
