Patriots Week 6: Joining the Mile High Club, Banging one out in Denver
The 3-2 Patriots are headed to Denver for a Week 6 matchup with the 4-1 Broncos, after a last second victory in Atlanta last week. This is the 39th time the two teams have met since they both joined the AFL in 1960. It is amazing these two have met up so many times, 39 in 45 years, since Denver is part of the AFC West.
From 1960-1966 the Patriots took 9 of the first 13 meetings between the two teams, then starting with the second meeting in 1966, the Broncos won 17 of the next 20 until 1998, including a 27-20 win the an Divisional playoff game in 1987. The Pats have won 3 of the last 5 meetings from 1999 to 2003, including that 2003 game which was a shootout at Mile High on Monday night.
In the 2003 Monday Night game the Pats had the ball at their own 1 yard line trailing by one. Coach Bill Belichick decided to take an intentional safety, rather than punt and give the Broncos great field position. The move worked as the Patriots stopped Denver's offense after the free kick. When the Pats got the ball back they went down the field and scored the winning touchdown on a Tom Brady to David Givens touchdown pass.
In 2002 the Broncos came into Foxboro and beat the Pats 24-16. This loss and the one against Green Bay at home in 2002 ended the "all blue" uniform thing...
