The return of the SI Cover Jinx
The Sports Illustrated cover Jinx appears to be back, after three strait weeks result in losses for those on the cover.
Last week: Saints on cover following win over Panthers...
Result: Giants 27, Saints 10
Two weeks ago: Ohio State makes the cover after win over Miami of Ohio...
Result: Texas 25, Ohio State 22
Three weeks ago: SI Picks the Panthers to win the Super Bowl...
Result: Saints 23, Panthers 20
Here Uncle Buck's Hall of Shame of the SI Jinx:
1956: Paul Hornung and Notre Dame lose 40-0 to Oklahoma the Saturday after gracing the cover, then fall to Navy and Pitt as well. The Irish finish the season 2-8.
1969: Defending champion Lee Trevino is on the cover of the U.S. Open preview; the next week he fails to make the cut.
1970: Texas, 10-0 and enjoying a 30-game winning streak, fumbles nine times in its next game, a 24-11 loss to Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl.
1975: With a 10-3 record, Angels pitcher Nolan Ryan makes a cover appearance. He loses his next eight decisions.
1978: Andy North gets the SI cover treatment after winning his first tournament, the U.S. Open. He then fails to win another event on the PGA Tour for seven years. In 1985 he finally wins his second tournament, another U.S. Open, and again makes an appearance on the cover. He fails to win another PGA tournament for the rest of his career.
1982: Penn State is unbeaten and ranked No. 3 until Todd Blackledge makes the cover. A week later Alabama picks off four of his passes and spoils the Lions' season with a 42-21 victory.
1984: After his '84 appearance, running back Jeff Smith misses his next game due to an ankle injury and the top-ranked Cornhuskers lose to Syracuse.
1991: Ramon Martinez and the Dodgers have a two-game lead in the NL West. Martinez loses his next two starts, and the Dodgers finish the season a game behind the Braves.
1993: A week after appearing on the cover, Notre Dame loses its No. 1 ranking when the Irish are stunned by Boston College on a last-minute field goal.
1997: Jacksonville's Mark Brunell and Carolina's Kerry Collins share a cover previewing the AFC and NFC title games. They also share the same fate in their following games: losses.
2001: Days after Nomar Garciaparra of the Boston Red Sox appeared on SI's cover, it was announced that he had split a tendon in his right wrist. His career is never the same.
10 Comments:
Can't forget about the Mo Vaughen cover a few years back when he was named MVP, on the cover sox blow it in the playoffs big time and Mo gets hurt, signed away, hurt again, traded hurt, I would say his cover ruined his career worse then Nomar's did
You forgot Univ. of Oregon football which graced the cover in 2003 following a huge upset win over Michigan. Next week, at home, they got absolutely demolished by Washington State 55-16.
Howabout the University of Illinois being on the cover and losing in last year's NCAA Tourney Championship game.
This year, after they put Jennie Finch on the cover to sell more magazines, the International Olympic Committee decided women's softball would no longer be an Olympic sport. No one else has had their entire sport done away with after appearing on the cover.
Never getting it right, the cover in the Mid-90's, encouraging University of Miami to get rid of its football program. Now one of the premiere programs in the nation while maintaining class.
There are so many great Jinx stories so little time...while the Mo Vaughn issue did "lead" to an o-fer on the playoffs, his carrer didn't nose dive as fast as nomars...the Oregon State story and Jennie Finch examples are great too...
How can anyone forget the famous Kerry Wood cover in 2003. The title "Hell Freezes Over: The Cubs Will Win The World Series".
