Patriots trade Bethel Johnson
The Patriots announced Monday that they traded Wide Receiver Bethel Johnson to the New Orleans Saints for Defensive Lineman Johnathan Sullivan. While Johnson could never keep himself on the field in the Patriots complex offense, your Uncle Buck will always remember the contributions he did make for the team, including:
2003 @ Indianapolis: Johnson's kickoff return for a touchdown at the very end of the 2nd quarter and near run back in the 4th that set up the deciding touchdown was the difference in the 38-34 win. The win also gave the Pats homefield for the AFC Title game where they beat the Colts 24-14.
2004 vs. Tennessee: In the Divisional Playoff Johnson caught a 50+ yard TD pass from Tom Brady to put the Pats up 7-0 on the 1st drive of the game. The Pats won 17-14.
2004 @ Cleveland: Bethel starts the game off with a kick return for a touchdown, on the 1st football play UB's son ever sees.
In return the Patriots get Johnathan Sullivan, Sullivan was the sixth overall pick in 2003:
In a perfect world, Sullivan can add depth at end and nose in the 3-4 defense, while also giving the team the option of going to the 4-3 and playing defensive tackle. The Patriots like to be multiple -- switching between defenses -- and having versatile linemen is a key.
