The Top 10 Broken Arms/Legs in Sports

After watching Junior Seau break his arm during the Patriots game on Sunday, your Unlce Buck decided to come up with a list of the Top 10 broken arm/leg incidents caught on tape during a sporting event...Warning this video is graphic:
`
10. Junior Seau (The above mentioned video. Particularly gross because of how thick his forearm is.)

9. European Soccer trip

8. Cage fighting, UFC style

7. Junior High Basketball game

6. Amateur Wrestling match

5. Muay Thai Broken Leg fight

4. Skateboarding fall

3. Arm Wrestling

2. Sid off the top rope (Like #1 this gets extra points for being on national TV when it happened)

1. Joe Theisman on Monday Night Football

How the heck did Tyrone Prothro not make this list...
Didn't his broken bone gouge the grass as he was falling?

    Great list.

I don't think there's any video of the Prothro injury. I've been searching for months.

  3. Love it all. Now Im gonna go hurl. My recomendation for the list is Jason Kendall a few years ago when he was still with the Pirates. Broke and sprained his ankle running out an infield hit and after he broke the ankle on his next step you could see his foot and ankle bone touching the ground at the same time next to each other. Definately Top 10 worthy.

  5. no Jason Kendall? I still get a sick feeling in my stomach when I even think about those pictures....

  6. Maybe you can't find video, but Jermaine Dye's broken leg and Moises Alou broken ankle belong up there too.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Can we stretch the list's definition to Top 10 Gruesome Sports Injuries? That way we could include Hasim Rahman.

  8. rodney dangerfield in caddyshack is clearly #1.

What about Hideki Matsui's broken wrist while sliding for a catch last season?

Seeing his wrist crack backwards like that seemed rather nasty to me.

    MCGAHEE...OUCH!

Lets not forget Moises Alou or Robin Ventura. Freddie Mitchell had a pretty gruesome femur break his freshman year at UCLA, too.

Geoff Jenkins, Brewers a few years back at home vs. Houston. It was gross, as bad as Theisman.

i loved the theisman one. that prick had it coming.

  15. Great list, but thirdsies for Jason Kendall. I was watching live when it happened and the broadcast to their credit only showed one replay. When they saw what happened, they didn't show again.

  18. Yes, second on Tim Krumrie.

  19. Napoleon McCallum's broken leg on Monday Night Football was pretty damn horrific.

What about Franco Columbu in the World's Strongest Man refigerator carry event?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Anonymous11:47 PM

    3rd on Krumrie...

His lower leg was flapping around in the replay like a flag on a windy day. I think Merlin Olsen stopped announcing football and starting selling flowers after seeing it.

Two more skateboarding accidents: another broken arm, and a compound hand fracture.

I seem to recall a preseason Steeler game a few years back, where some poor bastard had his leg entirely turned around the wrong direction, so that the heel was at the front of the foot. This ring any bells with anyone else?

If you're counting WSM, don't forget about Magnus Samuelsson breaking Nathan Jones's arm. Video here.

Here's a still image of Kendall's ankle; no video out there.

Willis Magahee anybody?? now that was more nuts than Joe's injury

Damn I know it's too early to say but seeing this right now makes me say, BJ Samms, anyone??

The junior high basketball one is the greatest just because of the crowd reaction. The lady at the end saying "Oh, his arm's broken" just cracks me up every time

How about Dave Dravecky? Arm snapped in half delivering a pitch, had to get it amputated. Anyone that finds a video of this is my personal hero...

I think this clip should have made it onto the top 10.

    How about Paterno?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Nick Johnson's broken leg when he collided with Austin Kearns this past season was pretty rough, though I haven't been able to find a video of it. It didn't look so bad at regular speed, but you saw all the players freaking out. Once you see the replay, you see why.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Holy hell, this is a great list but the comments make it even better.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Anonymous5:05 PM

Let's see, how 'bout Robin Ventura, think it was his last year with White Sox, slides into first base or trips over the bag, some fool thing, and next thing you know his foot's all danglin' and wiggly like an injured race horse. Ooooyeah, that one hurt but good.

Whoever was talking about the Steelers game where the guy turned his leg completely around, that Manlyweb site has that picture too: http://www.manlyweb.com/sports/injuries/wight.htm

Worst thing I ever remember seeing was Cliff Floyd playing 1B early in his career with the Expos...I think it was TOdd Hundley running down the line, caught the tip of his glove as he ran by and basically bent it back so the top of the glove was touching his elbow. I don't think Floyd has played 1B since.

I still think Sid Vicious bustin' his leg was pretty sick... can't believe the ref touch it even though it was dangling... almost puked first time I saw it!!

2nd place has to go to a clip I saw a while ago of a weightlifter that broke his lower leg while lifting. Then dropped the bar with something like 400 lbs. right on the broken leg. The spotter had to pull it off of him... looked soooo painfull, its gotta be on YouTube.com!!!

He suffered a ruptured artery in his left knee, and tore three ligaments, tore the calf and hamstring from the bone, and suffered nerve damage when 49ers linebacker Ken Norton Jr. sportsbook, twisted him to the ground. McCallum's cleat stuck in the ground, forcing his knee into a horrible dislocation. Norton lay pinned underneath a motionless McCallum for a couple of minutes while trainers attended to McCallum. http://www.enterbet.com

Their thoughts dwell on the next high, although they tell themselves they are still taking Vicodin for pain or to avoid the withdrawal symptoms. Individuals with a Vicodin addiction often truly feel physical pain, but it is psychologically produced.

  47. 2.bet basketball Luc Nilis - Ipswich Town vs Aston Villa, 2000
Three things strike us about the Luc Nilis incident:1. His shin seems to be wrapped around Richard Wright’s leg. Perhaps it is made of rubber? 2. Richard Wright seems to be in a lot more pain! 3. Nilis only has three fingers on his left hand.
Needless to say, Nilis would retire after only three games for the Villains following the injury. Something about shin splints… the softy! 3. Djibril Cisse – Blackburn Rovers vs Liverpool, 2004
Djibril ‘not enough milk as a youngster’ Cisse swamps the charts much like the Black Eyed Peas did in 2009, by appearing not once, but twice on OTP’s list! Cisse’s brittle bones first decided to give way when he came up against the hard-hitting Blackburn Rovers. At least if you are going to have a leg break against these gritty northern workhorses, it should be with a stamp, or a late, high challenge. But no, Cisse was happy to suffer his injury after a measly tangle of legs with Jay McEveley. He later revealed that had it not been for prompt attention from the trainers at the stadium, he would probably have lost the leg below the knee.
4.sportsbook Djibril Cisse – France vs China, 2006 It’s like deja vu all over again. For his second bone breaker, Cisse’s decided to swap to the other leg and take his talent to the international stage. Just 10 minutes into France’s friendly with China, Cisse was knocked off balance China captain Zheng Zhi. Bye-bye, leg. Bye-bye, World Cup. 5. Henrik Larsson – Lyon vs Celtic, 1999
Henrik Larsson managed to break his leg in two places during Celtic’s trip to Lyon, after getting his studs caught up in the grass as he tussled for a loose ball. This injury put the Swede on the sidelines for eight months but as with the Cisse injuries, there was no spectacular challenge that resulted in the leg break.6.Eduardo Birmingham City vs Arsenal, 2008 This is more like it! Hold on, to clarify, we are not celebrating the leg break suffered by Eduardo, as it was every bit as horrific as the picture and slow-mo video suggests, but if you are going to suffer a horrendous injury it may as well be at the hands of a nasty, nasty challenge instead of falling over like Larsson and Cisse. Has there been a worse timed, worse positioned tackle than this one by Martin Taylor at St Andrews? Roy Keane vs Haaland perhaps, but give Taylor some credit, since he isn’t actually mental! 7. Alan Smith – Liverpool vs Manchester United, 2006
Another bizarre one. While trying to block a free kick by Ginge Arne Riise, Smith fell awkwardly breaking his leg, and also dislocating his ankle. Although the Liverpool crowd applauded Smith’s exit aboard his stretcher, the hardcore followed the ambulance as it tried to leave the ground and give it a bit of a wobble. Lovely bunch, eh? Also, remember when Pepe Reina had hair?
8.march madness Marcin Wasilewski – Anderlecht vs Standard Liege, 2009
Not as famous as some on this list but just as brutal is the devastating tackle/stamp by Axel Witsel on an unfortunate Marcin Wasilewski back in August last year. Surgery has been carried out on Wasilewski’s multiple open fractures and his operations are not over. Who knows when the poor fella will be back, if at all. Vile.
    9. Iñigo Díaz de Cerio - Eibar v Real Sociedad, 2009
This is what happens when Spanish players close goalkeepers down. The universe gets messed up and so did Diaz de Cerio’s leg. There is something quite moving and a little disgusting about the way he leaves his leg dangling in the wind. 10. Jacob Olesen, 2006
OK, it is not strictly a broken leg (it’s a dislocation) but it is pretty damn gruesome. Meet Jacob Olesen of Viborg. Here is the moment he realises his left foot is pointing west. I think ‘ouchy’ would be a suitable speech bubble for this one!http://www.enterbet.com

  92. When a person loses one or more tooth and wants to get it replaced, an artificial tooth root placed in their jaw area, which would hold the artificial replacement teeth (prosthodontics), this artificial tooth root, usually made of titanium or ceramic material, is called implants.
Implanting tooth is based on human bone's natural ability to fuse on implant materials over a while. Dental implants have numerous advantages over conventional treatments using dentures and bridges anchored to the adjacent tooth.

Enough bone mass and healthy gums are the prerequisites to receive dental implant treatment. If you lack any of those parameters, you might require additional procedures before proceeding to dental implants. Check out bone grafting (augmentation) or sinus lift section to understand more.
Doctor. TK. Prabu would decide your treatment options based on various parameters like your bone density of jaws and gum health using multiple sophisticated instruments like CAD/CAM
Simulation and computed tomography and stents.

    Background
Though many advancements made on dental implant techniques, it is not a new thing and has been practised over the last 60 years. In 1965 Brånemark placed his first titanium dental implant into a human volunteer. He termed the clinically observed adherence of bone with titanium as "osseointegration" Since then, implants techniques have evolved so much (Excerpts from Wikipedia).

    Interesting Facts
There is archaeological evidence that humans have attempted to replace missing teeth with root form implants for thousands of years. Remains from ancient China (dating 4000 years ago) have carved bamboo pegs, tapped into the bone to replace lost teeth, and 2000-year-old remains from Egyptian mummies were found to have transplanted human teeth.
An archaeological site in Honduras dating back to 600 AD found a young Mayan woman with three missing teeth replaced by pieces of seashells with Bone growth around two of that implants (seashell), indicating that they were functional well as esthetic. (Excerpts from Wikipedia).
