Just before the game between the Patriots and New Jersey Jets began Sunday, your Uncle Buck was receiving text messages from his fraternity brothers Boo Boo and Danny Bloch..."Good Luck Punk" and "J-E-T-S, JETS, JETS, JETS" they said...UB hasn't heard from them since. Maybe that's because the Pats handed the NYJ their worst ever playoff loss, crushing them by 21, 37-16 in the first round of the NFL Playoffs.

The Pats took the opening kickoff and drove 65-yards in 10 plays to go up 7-0 right off the bat. The Defense took the emotion and sacked Chad Pennington on the Jets 1st drive, but a Corey Dillon fumble later, followed by a 77-yard Jerricho Cotchery catch and run for a touchdown and it was 10-7 Jets.

The Pats (who are the only team in the NFL to win a playoff game the last 4 seasons) didn't panic. instead they had Tom Brady go early and often to Jabar Gaffney who had his best game as a Patriot, contributing with 8 catches for 104 yards. Just before the half a Daniel Graham 1-yard TD pass from Brady gave the Pats a 17-10 lead.

In the 3rd, Chad Pennington's pass was knocked down by Rosevelt Colvin and picked up by Vince Wilfork, who was the only one who kept playing. The pass was ruled a lateral and after watching Belichick go bananas on the sideline, Wilfork rumbled 31 yards to the Jets 15 before being tackled by Cotchery. The Jets challenged the play, but the Pats kept the ball and four plays later, Stephen Gostkowski kicked a 28-yard field goal to give New England a 23-13 lead. Stevie-G had a steller rookie playoff game with 3 field goals and all 4 extra points.

In the 4th, after the Pats took a 30-16 lead, Asante Samuel picked off Pennington and ran the ball back 35-yards for the put-away score. Samuel, who was the topic of an article in the Boston Globe that highlighted a tattoo he has that reads "Get Paid", had 10 picks in the regular season, 2nd most all time for a Patriot.

The cold war between Belichick and Mangini ended after the game, at least on Belichick's side as the former mentor threw a Globe cameraman out of the way and hugged his former pupil. Following the game Bill was so excited he dropped an F-Bomb...

By Monday afternoon it was business as usual for the Pats as they released a statement from Scott Piloli regarding rumors that he was being courted by the New Jersey Giants:

"I am very honored to be granted the opportunity to discuss a potential position with the New York Giants. I have tremendous respect for the Kraft family, the Mara family, the Tisch family and the Giants organization. After careful consideration, and for personal reasons, I am continuing in my current role with the New England Patriots."

Up next for the Pats: A trip out west to take on the #1 seed San Diego Chargers, who not only have won their last 10, but who have defeated the Pats in their last two meetings...

Breaking out: Pats capture 5th division in 6 years

The Patriots won another t-shirt and hat game Sunday, beating the Jaguars 24-21 to capture their 4th strait AFC East title and 5th in 6 years. The game was a bone cruncher that was dominated by the Pats defense, which allowed two mistakes to equil 14 points, but for the most part shut down Jacksonville. Tom Brady showed why he should have been picked for the Pro Bowl with 249 yards passing on 28 of 39 passing with no turnovers. Brady rushed for a personal best 31 yards on 10 carries, and was almost broken in half while diving for a first down in the 2nd half. The play knocked him out of the game, but he shook it off and returned two plays later. Lawrence Maroney made his return and broke a long touchdown run late that put the Pats ahead for good.

With wins this weekend, the Broncos and Jets will take the 5-6 seeds. The Pats (11-4) currently have the 4th seed and are following the sinking Colts (11-4), who defeated New England earlier in the season. If the Pats win the final game in Tennessee (and they may end up resting some starters) and the Colts lose, they would take on the 6 seed and could head down a road to Baltimore, as opposed to making a stop in San Diego after hopefully taking out the 5 seed. As for now UB would love to get a chance to beat up on the Broncos and their rookie QB, but the matchup against Denver never turns out good, so it might be better to take on the J-E-T-S...Either way the Pats will look styling in their new shirts and hats, with the hopes of collecting more.

Last time UB checked, Donald Trump has a lot of money because he makes a lot of smart decisions. So what would make New York's crowned prince dump a headline making hottie over ethics of his beauty pageant? Miss USA Tara Conner has made headlines recently following reports of drug use and bi-sexual with, of all people, Miss Teen USA. So why would anyone think Trump would drop this pop-rock star so she could go running off to Playboy, instead of owing her career to the toupee wearing reality TV star. In fact the only draw back in today's press conference was that Trump wasn't able to use his catch phrase "You're fired!" As for UB writing on this topic just so he could post a few skimpy photos...Where would you get that from?

Pro Blow: Pats get only one invite to Hawaii

The Patriots got totally douched today by the NFL Pro Bowl system, which only picked Richard Seymour to be part of the post-Super Bowl squad. Normally your Uncle Buck would shrug it off and hope that it fires up the team. But to have San Diego get 9 guys and Indy get 5 is a joke. (How about the Texans, who the Pats just beat 40-7 last weekend getting 2 guys in.) Why not just field the entire team with Chargers and Colts for a full quarter? Isn't it amazing to see the teams coached by historic underachievers Marty Schottenheimer and Tony Dungy lead the entries, while Bill Belichick, who is known as a coach who prefers roll players over stars, only has the one. Figures that either Schottenheimer or Dungy will most likely be coaching the team, as AFC Championship loser.

A Festivus miracle

To be fair, UB is including Festivus in on this day of mixed-religion celebrations. Here is some video from Frank Constaza's made up holiday, followed by last year's post on the subject:

Many Christmases ago, Frank Costanza went to buy a doll for George (UB thought they were all Jewish...).There was only one doll left and as he reached for it, so did another man. After struggling for the doll, he thought there could be another way. The doll was destroyed, but out of that, a new holiday was born. It was called Festivus. A Festivus for the Rest of Us.

The holiday is on December 23rd. Rather than have a tree, the symbol of choice is an aluminum pole that requires no decoration.

Frank: I find tinsel distracting.

During Festivus dinner first comes "The Airing of Grievances" where you tell the family all the ways they have disappointed you over the last year.

Next is the Feats of Strength where the head of the family tests his strength against another friend or family member. Cosmo Kramer was given the honor but turned it down to George Costanza. Festivus is not over until the head of the family is pinned.

Charges: Putting Santa Claus on trial for lunacy days before Christmas
How it plays out: Thanks to inventive Defense Attorney Fred Gailey and a lazy post office branch, Santa gets off.
Memorable Quote:
Mrs. Mara: "Sometimes I wish I married a butcher or a plumber."
District Attorney Mara: "My dear, if I lose this hearing, you may very well get your wish."

11. Scut Farkus – A Christmas Story
Charges: School bully who chases and beats on Ralphie and his friends in A Christmas Story.
How it plays out: Ralphie snaps and kicks the crap out of Scut Farkus.
Memorable Quote: Ralphie as an Adult: "Scut Farkus! What a rotten name! There he stood, between us and the alley. Scut Farkus staring out at us with his yellow eyes. He had yellow eyes! So, help me, God! Yellow eyes! "

10. Harry Bailey - It's a Wonderful Life
Charges: After having his life saved by big brother George, Harry uses his brother’s college money after their father dies, then after graduation as he’s supposed to relieve George at the savings and loan, he shows up married and with a job working for his new father-in-law.
How it plays out: Being stuck with the burden of running the Savings and Loan and dealing with retarded Uncle Billy, George gets in financial trouble and thinks about killing himself. Of course George is saved by a guardian angel looking to earn some wings, but just as the town bails George out here comes Harry, now a war hero, to deliver the line that makes everyone cry…
Memorable Quote: “Good idea Ernie, a toast. To my big brother George, the richest man in town!”

9. Elf Boss – Rudolph the Red Nosed-Reindeer
Charges: Too hard on the other elves, particularly an elf named Hermey who just wants to be a dentist.
How it plays out: After helping to save Christmas, Hermey gets his revenge by giving his former boss a series of painful root canals.
Memorable Quote: “You’ll NEVER fit in!”

8. Lucy – A Charlie Brown Christmas
Charges: While technically a bitch, she picked the biggest loser in school and making him the director of the Christmas play.
How it plays out: Everyone laughs at Charlie Brown, Lucy calls him a blockhead for picking out a crappy tree.
Memorable Quote:
Lucy Van Pelt: I know how you feel about all this Christmas business, getting depressed and all that. It happens to me every year. I never get what I really want. I always get a lot of stupid toys or a bicycle or clothes or something like that. Charlie Brown: What is it you want? Lucy Van Pelt: Real estate.

7. Scrooge - A Christmas Carol/Frank Cross – Scrooged
Charges: The boss from hell treats his Number 2 like Number 2, buries his partner at sea, picks money over love and blows off charities. And in the case of Frank Cross, produces a LIVE version of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol on Christmas Eve.
How it plays out: After being visited by two ghosts that show Scrooge/Frank the error of his ways, a 3rd ghost scares him strait, prompting him to give his Number 2 a raise and try and make up for being such a dick.
Memorable Quote: Bah, humbug.

6. The Grinch - How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Charges: Hates his neighbors the Whos, who drive him nuts every year at Christmas with all the noise their new toys make, prompting him to rob them of all of their possessions, while dressed as Santa Claus.
How it plays out: The Grinch marches to the top of a nearby mountain to dump all the loot, when he hears the Whos singing anyway. He finally snaps and decides to give all the toys back before carving the roast beast.
Memorable Quote: Grinch: I must stop this whole thing! Why, for fifty-three years I've put up with it now. I must stop Christmas from coming... but how?

5. Professor Hinkle – Frosty the Snowman
Charges: Knowingly murders Frosty on two occasions just so he can get his magic hat back.
How it plays out: Hinkle is reprimanded by Santa who brings Frosty back to life.
Memorable Quote: “I must get that hat back! Think nasty, think nasty, think nasty!”

4. Frank Shirley – Christmas Vacation
Charges: The boss of Clark W. Grizwold suspends Christmas Bonuses for his employees so he can have a “healthy bottom line.”
How it plays out: Shirley is kidnapped by Clark’s cousin-in-law whose heart is bigger than his brain. After getting an earful from Clark he decides to re-instate all the bonuses.
Memorable Quote: Clark: “Hey. If any of you are looking for any last-minute gift ideas for me, I have one. I'd like Frank Shirley, my boss, right here tonight. I want him brought from his happy holiday slumber over there on Melody Lane with all the other rich people and I want him brought right here, with a big ribbon on his head, and I want to look him straight in the eye and I want to tell him what a cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, dickless, hopeless, heartless, fat-ass, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed sack of monkey sh*t he is. Charges: The richest man in Bedford Falls tries throughout his life to take control of the one business he doesn’t already control: The Bailey Savings and Loan. After old man Bailey dies (it was never clear if Potter played a role in that one), he goes after the new head George Bailey. When retarded Uncle Billy accidentally slips Potter $8,000, Potter keeps the cash, nearly leading to George committing suicide.
How it plays out: George gets the support of his friends to get out of debt, while Potter keeps the cash, but is still stuck in a wheelchair.

On the 50th birthday of your Uncle Buck's #1 childhood sports idol, Larry Joe Bird, UB has complied 33 random Larry Bird facts right off the top of his head...Enjoy:

1. He had a scholarship to Indiana University in 1974. He left after one day and later went to Indiana State.

2. He would have played for Bobby Knight. The Hoosiers won the NCAA title in 1976 without him.

3. Larry once promoted a burger from McDonald’s called “The Big 33.” It was a quarter-pounder(ish) with BBQ sauce and onions. They were awesome.

4. Larry won 3 NBA MVP awards in a row from 1984-86. Only Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlin and Michael Jordan have done the same.

5. Larry won a gold medal with “The Dream Team” in the 1992 Olympics. His point total for the final game: 0.

6. No one called Larry Legend “Larry Legend” while he played for the Celtics.

7. Larry retired days before a clause in his contract would have paid him millions more even if he never played again.

8. During a ceremony honoring Bird in the early 90s, Red Auerbach said if he had to start a team the one player he would pick would be Bird. Over Russell and the dozens of other hall of famers he coached.

9. Two of Larry’s most replayed highlights came at the Hartford Civic Center. The first was a game winning shot that rolled around the rim before dropping like water in a toilet, while the second was his over the backboard shot that while amazing did not count due to NBA rules.

10. At Larry’s retirement ceremony at the Boston Garden in 1992, host Bob Costas introduced a family member named Joe Bird that the family waved off, saying there was no brother Joe Bird. Joe Bird was Larry’s father who committed suicide when he was a child.

11. Larry worked as a garbage man in French Lick, Indiana before being recruited to go to Indiana State.

12. Larry was the MVP of the 1982 All-Star game.

13. Prior to Larry and Magic Johnson’s arrival the NBA finals were broadcast on tape delay.

14. Bird was 8-11 against Magic Johnson in the NBA finals games and 3-0 against Michael Jordan in the playoffs.

15. Larry won the first three NBA 3 point shooting contests at the All Star Game. In the 3rd one he didn’t even bother taking off his warm up jacket.

16. Larry was not always the best public speaker. During a victory rally following the 1981 NBA Finals Bird told the huge crowd he had seen a sign that “typified our season. Moses (Malone) does eat sh*t.” Larry also told an ESPN reporter, while with the Pacers front office, that he used to be insulted when the opposing team put a white guy on the court to defend him.

17. Larry was drafted 6th overall in the 1978 NBA Draft, even though he had already committed to returning to Indiana State. The following year he signed with the Celtics.

18. When Bird scored 60 points against the Atlanta Hawks in 1985 the game was played in New Orleans. It broke the team record that had been set by Kevin McHale only 9 days earlier. The pervious best was 56.

19. A man convicted of murder in Oklahoma City in 2005 asked the judge to sentence him to 33 years in honor of Larry Bird. The requested sentence was actually 3 years longer that what he was supposed to get.

20. Your Uncle Buck (along with Cam and Griff) appeared as extras in Celtic Pride with Larry Bird in 1996. UB and Cam were ejected from the film at the Boston Garden for trying to meet the star, Dan Aykroyd. The day of shooting was the last event ever at the Garden, making UB and Cam the last two people ever to be kicked out of the historic building.

22. Larry was the MVP of the 1984 and 86 NBA Finals but not 1981. Cedric Maxwell won the MVP that year.

29. Larry Bird used to look up into the Garden rafters before home games started during the National Anthem. He revealed at a press dinner years later that he was getting himself psyched up for the game by looking at Bobby Orr’s retired #4 and envisioning Orr flying across the ice after scoring the game winning goal in overtime of the 1970 NHL Stanley Cup Finals.

30. Larry is part owner of a Ford Lincoln Mercury dealership in Indiana.

31. Bird has called Dennis Johnson the greatest player he ever played with, Magic Johnson the greatest player he ever played against, Red Auerbach the greatest General Manager of all time, Pat Reilly the greatest coach of all time and Michael Jordan: God in disguise.

32. In the film Planes, Trains and Automobiles Del (John Candy) makes fun of Neil (Steve Martin) by saying that he plays with his balls too much. When Neil says he does not play with his 'balls,' Del laughs and says, “Larry Bird doesn’t do as much ‘ball handling’ in one night as you do in an hour.”

33. Larry Joe Bird turns 50 today on Dec. 7, 2006. He won world titles in 1981, 84 and 86 and led the Pacers to the NBA Finals in 2000 as a head coach. Happy Birthday, Mr. Bird.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) The Boston Red Sox reached a preliminary agreement Tuesday with shortstop Julio Lugo that would pay him $36 million over the next four years.
Details of the agreement were provided to The Associated Press by a person involved in the negotiations who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal was not final. Lugo must pass a physical.
Red Sox officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Boston has needed a shortstop since allowing Alex Gonzalez to leave as a free agent, and much of its attention seemed to be focused on Lugo.
The Red Sox had a busy day: They also reached a preliminary agreement on a $70 million, five-year contract with outfielder J.D. Drew.
Lugo started the 2006 season with Tampa Bay and was sent to the Dodgers at the trading deadline. He batted .308 with 12 homers for the Devil Rays and .219 with no homers for Los Angeles in the final two months of the season.
Boston has been filling in gaps at shortstop since dealing Nomar Garciaparra at the 2004 trading deadline. The Red Sox went on to win the World Series with Orlando Cabrera that year, but let him go as a free agent in the offseason and gave Edgar Renteria a four-year, $40 million contract.
After just one year in which he made 30 errors, the Red Sox paid Atlanta $11 million to take Renteria off their hands. Boston signed Alex Gonzalez to a one-year deal for $3 million, then let him go to free agency in the offseason after he provided them with stellar defense but hit just .255.
``I will tell you what, we saw a year of defense like I don't know you'll ever see again, maybe even from him,'' manager Terry Francona said. ``You saw a spectacular shortstop have a spectacular year. That was fun to watch.''
The Red Sox are hoping prospect Dustin Pedroia could play second base; if not, they have Alex Cora.

Lions almost too much to bear; Pats survive 28-21

There really isn't much to say about the Patriots 28-21 win over Detroit yesterday. While UB and the boys did it up right with a monster pregame meal and post game party in Foxboro, the Pats almost made them barf it all up. The now 9-3 Pats came out flat and took a 13-10 lead into the half against a now 2-10 Lions team that Las Vegas thought was 13.5 points worse...The 13-10 lead was a 21-13 deficit in a blink of an eye before the Pats turned it on for a touchdown, 2 point conversion and another TD to close it out. Right now the Pats look like they're just going through the motions. Another fumble by Ben Watson, who is quickly turning into this year's biggest bust, and a pick by Asante Samuel, who is getting ready to count his cash and pick a new team, was combined with a sub par but 3 TD day from Corey Dillon. So a win is a win, but the Pats better get on top next week in Miami, where they always have trouble, if they want to stay with the pack and get a shot at the #2 seed.
